Unexpected Joy

Joy can be unexpected.  The other day our boys were playing soccer in the street, and I was working a project for work.  It was really a hard project…not.  I was writing down nursery rhymes to go into a vintage 75 cent lunch box that say “Hey Diddle Diddle” on it.  I’m a speech therapist and a mom.  So I wear a few hats.

Driving by during this time was a neighbor with her grandchildren in the backseat.  Windows down…she asked…”Are you going to see the horses tonight?”  I was confused as I thought the event was on a different evening.  I said “no…not planning on it but text me when you get there if it is worth seeing.”  I told the boys we should pack up the soccer cones and balls to prep for a walk to our local venue with fun events.  It was an impromptu decision.  Dad was still at work.  Dinner was not prepped.  But, why not?

The why was to come.  The why is always to come.  The joy often follows are choices to do the unexpected when opportunities arise.  Joy is those God-incidences that happen if we stop, look, listen, and act.

We had a good time at the local event for about an hour.  My neighbor left early with her younger grandson getting fussy.  I stayed with my boys and enjoyed a drink, the lights, the sunset, the artificial snow, and the horses.  The people were gaga over these famous horses.  What amazed me more was ALL the gifts present that night.

1 Chronicles 16:26-27

26 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

  1. Hi Jennifer, so nice to visit today. I love how the spontaneous moment of taking your boys to the horse show brought you joy. It’s so true! We should do it more often; stop the routine and just live. Thx for the reminder.
    Have a great weekend!

  2. THIS: “The why was to come. The why is always to come. The joy often follows are choices to do the unexpected when opportunities arise. Joy is those God-incidences that happen if we stop, look, listen, and act.” I’m in the 4 spot this week.

    1. Thanks for popping by Tara! I love your emphasis that you found. The why is always to come when we look for God in all things!

    1. The local event was for the community and to promote Budweiser beer. One of the special horses you see on TV commercials was on show for all to see. It was neat for our boys because they had never been close to a real horse before. Life in the suburbs!
